Managing Staff Without Managing Every Minute

One of the biggest traps practice owners fall into is believing that good staff management means constantly watching what everyone is doing.

It doesn’t.

In fact, the more you hover, check and remind, the more your staff can become dependent on you. Before long, you are answering questions they could answer themselves, solving problems they could solve, and wondering why nobody seems to take enough responsibility.

Good management starts with making expectations very clear. What is the staff member responsible for? What does a good result look like? How will you both know whether the job is being done well?

Then give them room to do it.

That doesn’t mean ignoring performance. Check results regularly, correct problems early and acknowledge a job well done. But when something goes wrong, try asking, “What do you think we should do about this?” before automatically providing the answer.

You may be surprised at how often they already know.

The goal of staff management isn’t to create people who follow you around waiting for instructions. It is to build a team of capable people who think, take responsibility and help make the practice run better.

And that makes the owner’s life a whole lot easier too.
